About Us
BohoBio was started in 2022 by myself (Rick Martin) and my wife, Hyang Lan. I am a professor of biology at the University of Maryland Global Campus and I teach general biology and environmental science for non-majors. Hyang Lan is a graphic artist with a great appreciation of nature and concern for animals that could be harmed by human activities. We both want to help draw attention to the lesser-known animals of the world whose homes are disappearing and whose populations are in decline. These animals need our help, but they can't ask for it directly. So, we started the non-profit BohoBio ("protect life") to increase awareness and provide support for actions that will protect these animals and their homes.
Our strategy is simple and based on a root-cause approach to the problem of declining biodiversity. Through my interactions with students I have found that most people do care about and want to protect endangered species, but only after they find out they exist. So, we are targeting this lack of awareness of endangered species by creating characters based on them that we hope will make these species better known and increase concern for their protection. We are presenting these characters through our animal bios page, our YouTube channel, our blog, and through various products we have in our online store. All proceeds from these are being donated to our partner NGOs who are working hard to protect Earth's biodiversity. So, any support you provide to BohoBio will end up helping protect our endangered friends.
We are not the most tech savvy couple, so you may notice our content lacks the bubble and bounce of pages made by more professional creators. But hopefully our sincerity of concern will mask our technical deficits and allow our pages to accomplish what we are trying to do ~ improve awareness and protection for all of Earth's biodiversity and work toward a future in which our friends still have a home.

Promoting Sustainability
BohoBio is dedicated to protecting biodiversity through our educational content and products including information on how people can reduce their personal ecological footprints. As a business we are making choices to try and keep our own footprint small. For example, BohoBio is using GreenGeeks as our webpage server. Communication is the keystone to education and we are trying to find as broad an audience as possible by way of the ever-evolving internet. So we are wading into the ocean of social media using the popular tools of the day including web blogs, Facebook (Meta), Instagram, etc. to draw attention and traffic to our YouTube channel and online stores. All BohoBio’s original characters are the result of a lot of time and talent invested by our graphic artist and were drawn for the purpose of increasing awareness and concern for the animals they represent. These characters are copyrighted products, and if you want to use any of these characters for your projects, we request you not go outside of “Fair Use” guidelines as described here: https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/four-factors/. In short, you can use these images for educational purposes but not for financial gain. When you use our images, you need to acknowledge the source and if you link back to our original page that would be helpful. We are trying to generate revenue to put toward the protection of endangered species, and any use of our products that does not result in traffic to our page, products or YouTube videos will not assist this cause. In regards to videos, do not copy them and show them outside of YouTube. Be sure to use the YouTube link whenever you show these videos or embed them in a different website or presentation. Again, you are helping us by sharing our content and increasing views of our YouTube channel, but copying our content and taking views away from our channel does the opposite.

Bohobio is not collecting personal information from visitors to our online content. All financial transactions are being carried out by 3rd party sites that have their own privacy policies. Our store is being hosted by Redbubble, and you can view their privacy policy here: https://www.redbubble.com/privacy . Our donation option is being hosted by Donorbox, and their privacy policy can bee seen here: https://donorbox.org/privacy .
